It Ertz when Eifert
There's been some concern & discussion this week about our Injured Reserve positions and how they are being used. We instituted the IR basically in response to Tom Brady blowing out his knee in 08. IR was, more or less, meant for Franchise Tag level players being kept for the following year, but then the NFL changed their rules pertaining to IR. IR used to be a season ending event and now it's not. A player can now come back from IR. So our IR became a place where a team could stash an injured player for later in the season. To make things worse, or more confusing, a player can be placed on our IR if they are just listed as "out". It doesn't take an IR designation from the NFL. That's been the rub for some. There's nothing we can do about this to my knowledge. It is now just another strategic move all teams can make. There is a downside to stashing players this way. Teams that have non-IR players in the IR slots can't add new players via free agency or waivers without fixing their rosters first. I, along with others, believed a team couldn't participate in a trades if they had non-IR players in the IR slots. That has been dis-proven recently. Ultimately, any team stashing players using this tactic will eventually have to set their rosters right. It's not a viable long term plan for success. We can discuss the IR slots and if we think the league should continue with them or do away with them at a later date, but for now that's our system and everyone can do it.
